YRL Evening and Weekend Assistant (YEWA)


 
Reporting to the Unified Access Services Manager (UASM) for Rosenfeld Library, Charles E. Young Research Library, and Enterprise-Wide Operations, the YRL Evening and Weekend Assistant (YEWA) performs all Charles E. Young Research Library functions and supervises student staff. Major duties include circulation desk activities (including: checkout/in, renewals, requests, answering patron questions, and enforcing library policy), supervision and training of 10 FTE student employees (approximately 20 employees) public service, handling billing questions, processing course reserves, coordinating and conducting lost and missing item searches, stacks and item record maintenance, library card issuance, responding to user complaints and safety and security issues, and basic technical processing. Responsible for ensuring all access and public service functions are efficiently performed and coordinated nights and weekends, in the absence of other Access Services staff. Works collaboratively with the UASM in day-to-day planning and decision-making for the department. Assists in the library's efforts to connect with patrons through various official UCLA Library web and social media outlets to promote and provide library services, foster a sense of community, and to resolve problems. Serves as a UAS representative for the LibAnswers reference support team. Performs regularly scheduled hours responding to tickets triaged for UAS/YRL. Monitors the department's shared email accounts and responds to patron inquiries. Assists in the maintenance and update of UAS content on the UCLA Library webpages. Works closely and collaboratively with other UAS evening and weekend staff to ensure safe and secure operations, and to provide emergency backup coverage for all libraries reporting to the University Librarian. Modifies work schedule when a need for coverage arises.

The Access Services department serving the Charles E. Young Research Library annually circulates 200,000 volumes, handles over 60,000 interlibrary loan requests, and maintains the 2.2 million volume collection spread out over six floors. Access Services also works in conjunction with the Research Library Social Sciences and Humanities Division, International Studies and various other UCLA Library departments to maintain the newly renovated Research Commons, a technology rich, group study and collaboration space within the Research Library. The department also handles access services duties for the East Asian Library, and makes regular referrals to the Research Library Social Sciences and Humanities Division, International Studies and Library Special Collections. The department is part of a larger Unified Access Services organization working together to provide service to 8 libraries on the UCLA campus.

The Enterprise-Wide Operations section of Access Services is responsible for coordinating and executing annual deposits of materials from the libraries to the Southern Regional Library facility, planning and executing large-scale shifting operations, pulling and replacing materials for various digitization projects, opening and receiving shelf-ready materials at various libraries, and coordinating course reserves policies at the UCLA Libraries.
